Frequently Asked Questions
What defines a service animal?
The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as “any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Other species of animals, whether wild or domestic, trained or untrained, are not service animals for the purposes of this definition."
Is my service animal allowed in the ambulance with me to be transported to an emergency room?
The EMS crew will transport a service animal with its owner to the hospital if the animal is deemed to be under control of its owner, does not pose a threat to the crew’s safety, does not hinder the crew’s ability to treat the patient and/or the animal is housebroken.
Will the EMS crew transport my mobility device (i.e. wheelchair, cane, walker)?
Yes, the paramedics and EMTs will make accommodations to transport a patient’s mobility device.
