On Friday, January 26th, 2024, Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to four kayakers who were roughly 100 yards offshore Lanikai Beach. Just after 2:00 p.m., lifeguards were on a jet ski patrol near the Mokulua Islands, when they were waved down by one of the kayakers. Three people were in the water wearing life-jackets, while the fourth was still in one of the double kayaks.
After a quick assessment, lifeguards recognized one of the kayakers who was in the water, was not breathing. Lifeguards brought him and his son quickly to shore on the jet ski. Onshore, lifeguards performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation prior to the arrival of the Honolulu Fire Department, who took over CPR.
Lifeguards returned back to the two kayakers and brought them to shore. They did not require medical attention.
The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics took over with advanced life support, treating and and transporting the patient, a male, believed to be in his 60s, to a local emergency room in critical condition.
The three were said to be part of a larger group that were on the Mokulua Islands. Lifeguards then responded to the Mokulua Islands and helped transport the rest of the group safely to shore.
The Honolulu Police Department and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement also responded.
