Honolulu Ocean Safety Rescues Multiple People During Windy Conditions
May 8, 2023
Just after 3:45 p.m., Honolulu Ocean Safety responded to a 911 call for five stand-up paddlers on the Mokulua Islands unable to get back to shore. Lifeguards responded via jet ski and truck. Lifeguards made contact with the group, two men and three women, who were being blown by high winds away from the islands. Lifeguards made three trips, rescuing the visitors and transporting their boards, back to shore safely. The five did not require medical attention.
Lifeguards also co-responded with other agencies on multiple rescues. On the north and east shores, where we had strong winds, lifeguards performed 10 rescues and more than 1,500 preventative actions in total. Ocean Safety wants to remind the public to please take notice of the weather conditions prior to setting out on ocean activities.
